The Kingsbridge culvert saga has finally come to an end – three weeks earlier than expected.

After months of disruption, uncertainty and painstaking work beneath the town’s streets, the construction workers who have brought the project to a close are being thanked by the community.

The team from Ultim8 Construction Ltd worked through weekends, rain and seemingly endless summer heatwaves to complete the repairs.

And despite working in difficult conditions, those on site became familiar faces around Kingsbridge, with residents describing them as friendly and approachable throughout the project.

Kingsbridge Town Clerk Katherine Harrold said she was “in awe” of what the workers had achieved.

The recent heatwaves had left many people struggling with fatigue, she said, yet the construction team continued with the physically demanding work.

“Each and everyone one of them has worked tirelessly on this project,” she said. “They have been great to have around.”

Much of the culvert was excavated by hand due to the close proximity of gas and broadband infrastructure, adding to the challenge faced by the team.

Harrold added that she would “really miss them”, saying the workers had fitted themselves in so well during their time there.

But the project became about more than repairing a vital piece of infrastructure.

Kingsbridge Town Council said: “Our last mention goes to Bro from Ultim8 Construction, the main man behind the diligence and drive that carried this project through.

“We want to thank you for the care, consideration, and professionalism you’ve shown our town.”

The site was also welcomed pupils from Kingsbridge Community College after Ultim8 suggested allowing the next generation of engineers to see the work first-hand.

They also helped Kingsbridge In Bloom volunteers dig and repair planters, contributing to the town’s floral displays.

For a project which has caused its fair share of frustration, the workers themselves have become a positive part of the story.

In more ways than one, they have helped build a town the community can be proud of.
