SOUTH West Devon MP Gary Streeter will see his seat disappear if parliamentary boundary changes, proposed this week, are carried out.

The seat he has represented since 1997 will disappear under proposals put to the Government.

Three new seats will change the face of parliament for South Hams residents.

A new Totnes and Ivybridge seat would see Ivybridge, Modbury and Aveton Gifford join the majority of the South Hams under one constituency.

But the South West Devon seat would be split three ways with parts becoming a Tavistock and Plympton seat and Plymstock, Brixton and Wembury going into a new Plymouth Sutton seat.

South West Devon MP Gary Streeter said: 'I think it's upsetting that Plympton, Plymstock and Ivybridge have been shunted into different constituencies. I always thought that seat worked very well.

'The draft report by the Boundary Commission suggests linking Tavistock with Plympton which has worked historically but will not work alongside Okehampton which is in mid-Devon. It's an incoherent constituency and needs looking at again.

'The rural communities of Wembury and Brixton will certainly miss out under plans to bring them in with Plymouth.

'Of course these changes will have to be voted on in 2013.

'Lots of MPs are unhappy so these changes may never happen.

'If there is a general election before then it will work on the current constituencies.

'I think we just have to crack on with the job and wait and see what happens.'

Dr Sarah Wollaston, MP for Totnes, said: 'These changes to South Devon's boundaries would radically alter the constituency boundary between the South West Devon and Totnes constituencies and also make changes to Blatchcombe and Marldon wards.'

'The proposals will now be the subject of a consultation and I look forward the hearing all the views of those who will be affected.

'If the boundaries do change as suggested, I would also like to hear views on the new name for the constituency.

'The largest population will be in Brixham and yet this has not been reflected in the proposed name.

'Of course the constituencies are not politicians decisions, it is up to the Boundary Commission.

'But if any residents have an idea what the new Totnes and Ivybridge Constituency should be called I would ask them to contact me and let me know their thoughts.'
