A fire rescue was delayed last night night due to a car parked inconsiderably and illegally on double yellow lines, making the road impassable.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service were responding to a chimney fire and were delayed for approximately five minutes due to a car parked on double yellow lines and blocking the fire appliance from being able to pass.

The car was parked on Waterloo Street in Kingsbridge. The owner eventually turned up and moved the vehicle to allow the fire and rescue crew through.

Matthew Radford, manager of the Kingsbridge Fire Station reminds the public to be aware when parking. “We urge all drivers to be considerate when parking their vehicles. Seconds really can make the difference when responding to emergencies, so please ask yourself, ‘would a fire appliance or ambulance fit through that space?’ when you park your vehicle.

“You can assist us greatly by taking a few simple measures such as:

- not parking on double yellow lines

- parking close to the kerb

- leaving extra room near tight corners

- folding in your wing mirror

- leaving your wheels straight, and not full lock sticking out into the road”
