An event celebrating trees and woodlands is returning to a South Hams village in September.
South Brent Wood Fair is taking place on Saturday, September 9 from 10am to 5pm, in and around the village hall in Station Approach.
Organised and run by the hedge and wood group of Sustainable South Brent, the free, family friendly fair will celebrate the area’s trees and woodlands and all their rich wildlife, culture, traditions, enterprises, crafts and skills, organisers said.
Those attending will be able to experience traditional woodland skills like charcoal burning, willow weaving, oak joinery and pit sawing as well as other crafts, demonstrations, talks, walks, games and more. There will be stalls, exhibitions, workshops, guided walks, music, story telling, poetry, children’s activities, plenty of food and a bar.
Organisations taking part include Devon Rural Skills Trust, Devon Wildlife Trust, the Woodland Trust, the Forestry Commission, Orchard Link, Moor Trees, Dartmoor National Park Authority and more. The event will give the public an opportunity to have a go at craft activities including using shave-horses, a pole-lathe, spoon carving and willow work.
There will be talks on topicsm including woodland livelihoods, ecology, wood-fuel energy systems and what it takes to restore an ancient woodland on Dartmoor.
Coordinator Robin Toogood said: “The Wood Fair is a great opportunity for people to share their love of trees, woodlands and working with wood. We have a great line-up of organisations and are aiming to build on the success of our last Wood Fair, held in 2014”.
Sustainable South Brent is a not-for-profit charitable company set up in 2006 to promote sustainable behaviour in the village and surrounding area.
