BUTTERPARK Care Home is due to close in the wake of county council cuts. The Ivybridge residential home is one of 20 that the local authority will end its responsibility for, after an announcement made on Monday. The care home will close later this year following the major cuts to residential care services across Devon. The council is set to close 20 out of its 22 care homes across the county to help reduce a £70 million care bill. Those affected by the closure of council-run homes will move to the private sector which, the council said, represent 'better value for money'. The council say the unit cost per bed, per week at Butterpark for 2013/14 was £884 while the cost of a residential placement in the independent sector for the same time period was £426. Butterpark operates 28 beds – 20 long stay and 8 short stay. Currently there are 14 long stay residents at the home, 13 women and one man, all aged between 85 and 97 years old. There are two residents with physical disability, one with visual impairment and two with dementia. Seven of the residents previously lived in the Ivybridge area while the remaining seven have come from further afield including outside Devon. Cllr Karen Pringle, mayor of Ivybridge, said: 'Obviously it is a shame that it has been closed. 'We have been told numerous times about the cuts that Devon County Council need to make. 'I just hope that they manage to re-home the people that are there not too far away from their families. 'As a town council we need to look into it and to see if there is any action that we can take. 'It's such a shame, Butterpark has been a home for its residents. 'Moving is a big disruption and I hope that they can all find a new home close to their families.'
