When Maud Dore was born, Edward VII was on the throne.
She has lived through five British monarchs, two world wars and unimaginable technological changes, ranging from the first flying machines to the Internet.
She has two children, six grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and two great, great grandchildren.
Members of her family are planning to join her at the Windward Nursing Home at Stoke Fleming on Sunday with a cake and a bottle of champagne to help her celebrate her landmark birthday.
Her daughter Marlene, who is herself 78 years old, said of Maud: 'She was a great mum.
'She was always one of those women who was meticulous and very strict.
'She knew her own mind.
'We never went without anything.'
Maud was born in South Africa where her father was in the army and her mother worked in the household of Boer War veteran Sir Nevil Macready.
She was the eldest of three sisters and four brothers.
The family moved from South Africa to Surrey where Maud grew up and eventually married.
The family moved to Slapton in 1949 after they were advised to move to the area for the health of Maud's son Tony, said Marlene.
Maud's husband Frederick worked as a waiter at the then Torcross Hotel.
Maud lived in Slapton until she was 80 years old before moving to Kingsbridge.
She came to Stoke Fleming last year after suffering a stroke.
