A volunteer group that looks after a prized Ivybridge public green space is looking forward to the next addition to it - new goalposts.

The Friends of MacAndrews Field is a community group dedicated to the management and development of the park, off Exeter Road.

The friends work closely with owners Ivybridge Town Council as well as South Hams District Council, local sport clubs and other groups like PL:21 Transition Initiative.

Since 2011 the friends have overseen the transformation of the field, including fundraising and carrying out much of the work themselves. This has included clearing scrub and planting hedges, trees and flowers, creating a natural play area in the north west corner, and installing commemorative benches in honour of J J MacAndrews of Lukesland, who gave the field to the town, and the Bedford Boys, an American military unit stationed there during the second world war.

The friends have also put in interpretaion boards and a new gate at the Exeter Road entrance.

The latest addition is to be some new five-a-side goalposts, expected any day now after some delays. Once installed the posts will be freely available to be used and enjoyed by everyone.

Looking further ahead, the next working party for scrub clearance and other work in the field is on Sunday, March 19 from 10.30am onwards. The focus will be on cutting down and clearing last year’s wild flower vegetation and weeds, and preparing the ground to sow more wild flower seeds. Anyone is welcome, including children, although they must be with their families.

This year’s annual Big Lunch will take place on Sunday, June 4 in the field. Look out for posters around town, and for further information on this or any aspect of the friends’ work visit the group’s Facebook page. To contact the Friends, email secretary Von Waterman on [email protected].
