Alex Gath, of Belle Vue Road, Kingsbridge, writes: I live in a residential part of Kingsbridge, a part of town with very limited parking places provided for the many residents by the county and district councils. A few months ago, traffic enforcement changed from South Hams Council to Devon County Council. We have noticed a sea change in the number of civil enforcement officers keen to visit our peaceful part of town. We now enjoy targeted ticketing sometimes four times a day at all times, even at 10.30am on Remembrance Sunday. If parking provision is completely inadequate then there are easy pickings for these smiling, happy-go-lucky folk in our daily game of musical chairs. It has been interesting to find out recently that, on an average daily shift, one civil enforcement officer has to cover Totnes, Ivybridge, Salcombe, Kings-bridge and Dartmouth, yet they decide to spend approximately 30 per cent of their shift in our quiet part of town twitching expectantly with their cameras and machines. On one occasion last week one had invited his colleague along to fill his boots as folk arrived home, driving round and round and round again looking for a gap. While the officer spends time here, presumably the busy town centres of Totnes, Dartmouth, Salcombe and Ivybridge have free-for-alls? This is clearly overzealous and targeted enforcement in the knowledge that they, the authorities, have completely failed in their parking strategy and provision for the town. Countless letters have been sent by frustrated residents to councils and elected councillors without any improvement. Perhaps we should elect those who will do something about it instead of pursuing their own interests? In any event, as one of Devon County Council's best customers, if you want some proper sport, I've heard Totnes is beautiful this time of year, because we all deserve a lie-in on a Sunday morning.
