Flood alerts have been issued for major rivers across the South Hams as heavy rainfall hits the region.

The Environment Agency says flooding is possible around the River Dart, the River Erme and the River Avon.

The alerts, in place for South Devon and the River Dart area, are in force from Friday (August 16) afternoon until the evening.

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for most of the day on Friday.

It predicts 60 to 80mm of rain could fall, with forecasters saying flooding is possible.

Strong gusts of 30 to 40mph are also predicted in hilly areas and along the coastline.

“Flooding is possible on Friday afternoon and evening,” the Environment Agency said.

“Levels suggest that there could be flooding to low lying land and roads close to rivers though no flooding to properties is expected.

“Take care near the areas of concern and monitor your local weather conditions.

“We are constantly monitoring river levels and have staff in the area checking for and clearing blockages in this location.”

The Environment Agency said it will be updating the alert on Saturday morning.
