Ducks made homeless during a recent storm will get a new roof over their heads.
The duck house in Totnes town centre’s leat, which was washed away during Storm Eleanor, is going to be repaired and replaced.
And then the ducks and moorhens will get their new home – in the shape of a pair of mini semi-detached duck “bungalows”.
The duck house, with two rooms with separate entrances, has been commissioned by the Totnes Gardens community group and should be put in place on the controversially pollarded willow tree next to the Town Mill in the next few weeks.
Totnes Gardens spokesman Diana Cusack said: “We were going to put a new duck house there before the old one was damaged. “We plan to nip back into the leat and secure the damaged one and also put in the new one. ”
Totnes Gardens moved in earlier this year to cut back bushes and clear out some of the rubbish from the leat outside the Town Mill following years of complaints about it being an eyesore.
She said that despite a clean up the leat was still being used as a rubbish dump.
“We will be trying to clean it up more regularly,” she added.
She also said Totnes Trust was now looking at clearing out rubbish dumped in the area around the mill waterwheel.
“The good thing is that there is already wildlife back in that area,” she said.
