The Tour of Britain cycle race finally winds its way through the South Hams on Monday- and one town council is calling on spectators to dress to impress.

The Tour first sped into Devon back in 2007 and has left a long-lasting legacy - and the county has provided the setting for some of the most exciting moments in Tour history.

Watching the world’s best cyclists tackle some of Devon’s toughest climbs has often been the highpoint of the race in every sense.

Now Ivybridge Town Council is urging spectators and businesses to dress up and enter a competition with prizes to be had.

Dartmoor continues to prove a popular destination for cycling tourism as well as the Tour - and its inclusion in the race again this year coincides with the National Park’s 70th anniversary.

Andrew Watson, Dartmoor National Park’s Head of Access, recreation and estates, said: "We are delighted that the Tour of Britain is returning. It’s a fantastic opportunity to show Dartmoor in all its glory to a worldwide audience."

Monday is the second stage of this year’s Tour, starting in Sherford at 11am and ending in Exeter, after a 184km ride, shortly after 3.30pm.

Slapton Sands, Kingsbridge and Tavistock will host sprint finishes where riders can gain points towards the overall Sprint Jersey and gain time bonuses.

Other stages on Monday (September 6):

1230: Strete / Blackpool sands

1240: Torcross

1256: Kingsbridge

1408: Tavistock

1410: Rundlestone

1439: Postbridge / Warren House Inn

1537: Exeter (Queen Street)

The tour starts on Sunday (September 5) with a 170km stage from Penzance to Bodmin.

Later next week, the Tour passes through Wales, the North West, Cumbria, and Scotland.

The race ends in Aberdeen on Sunday September 12 when cyclists compete in the most northerly point that the modern edition of the race has ever reached.
