Slapton Line – the People's Sacrifice – are a group that intends to deliver living history to about 2,000 primary school children.
They wish to relate the social impact seventy years ago, in November and December 1943, of the forced evacuation of 840 families, 200 farms from 30,000 acres by the Admiralty in Slapton.
This allowed the US Army and Navy to gain 'battle inoculation' with live ammunition in readiness to liberate France and the beginning of the end of the Second World War.
Following a successful two nights appearing in the Slapton Village Evening earlier in November, the group will be outside Quay House, Kingsbridge tomorrow.
The group hope to bring the public a taste of that Christmas in 1943 thanks to the support of KTC.
This is a launch event where the group wants to speak to as many original residents of the evacuation, their families, Second World war veterans and those residents of the South Hams who are interested in both commemorating these dramatic events, hearing and telling the stories of the war. They are also looking for enthusiasts with WW2 Civil Defence, Royal Navy, RAF, l, US Navy & Army vehicles and enjoy re-enacting 1943 characters and events to join us both tomorrow and in the future during the build up to the 70th Anniversary of D-Day on June 6, 2014.
The group is also very keen to find someone with plans for a grand design who need a property demolished. If you have full planning permission and the right structure the group would like to carry out a public demolition using a tank!
