Rolf Burnie, of Thurlestone, near Kingsbridge, writes: It seems Davina Owen objects to laws that have a Christian basis to them, Letters, May 30. Perhaps, therefore, she would like to retain slavery and child labour. Possibly a lack of education except for the rich and privileged, and an absence of health care for everyone, plus a host of other practices that have now ended as a result of the campaigning of Christians wanting to implement Biblical standards into our society. And no doubt she also wishes to retain the freedom to murder unborn babies – especially if they are less than perfect or female – or for the rich to become ever more wealthy at the expense of the poor, to mention just two areas that many Christians currently campaign about. Maybe she simply wants to stamp out Christianity, as Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, Idi Amin and Chairman Mao tried to do. Or perhaps a totally secular atheistic regime would suit her, as in North Korea with all its oppression and slave labour camps and lack of freedom of speech. Or again maybe she'd prefer Shariah law instead and wish we could become more like Sudan – try telling that to Meriam Ibrahim sentenced to 100 lashes for marrying someone of her own choice and to death for standing up for her Christian faith. I know what I prefer. And if that is considered to be cherry picking, so be it. Meanwhile, I'm just thankful I live in a country where Christian values have left me with the freedom to express my views in public – for the time being.
