SPECIAL carer Pam Deeley, who devoted her time to helping many people in Dartmouth, has died.

Pam trained as a State Registered Nurse at St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester in 1948 and started working at the Simpson in Edinburgh continuing her training, before moving to Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth to do theatre work.

When she and her husband moved to Dartmouth, Pam continued her work in caring for people.

In 1994, she succeeded Irene Scawn as chairman of Dartmouth Hospital League of Friends and subsequently became president of the league.

Pam was chairman of the Devon Association of Hospital League of Friends and was made president. Alongside this, she was chairman of Dartmouth Caring for many years.

When her husband’s health deteriorated she resigned from these organisations but continued to take an interest in their work.

Dee Nutt, chairman of Dartmouth Caring, said: ‘Pam introduced the luncheon club and when she passed over the reins to me in 2006 I inherited a vibrant charity which was in turn able to help Pam and her husband when they also needed support.’

In 2002, Pam received the annual chairman’s award from the Torbay Trust for her work with Dartmouth Caring.

Pam was still keen to maintain her interest in local healthcare and when Carol Lingard became chairman of the Dartmouth League of Friends Pam persuaded her to be the local delegate of the Devon Association.

Carol said: ‘Pam was a very special person who will be remembered by many in Dartmouth and sorely missed by all who knew her.’

Last Christmas, Pam moved to a nursing home in Oxford to be near her family.

At the family’s request, any donations should be made to the Dartmouth Hospital League of Friends and sent to Carol Lingard at the hospital.
