REPORTER Ben Walker has cycled from John o' Groats to the South West and is on target to reach Land's End tomorrow.

Ben and his friends Pete Wright and Chris Telfer set out from the top of Scotland on Sunday, August 12, to cycle the length of Britain and raise money for the Chemotherapy Outreach Project.

The journey went well through Scotland as they faced unpredictable weather but as they reached Kendal in the Lake District it became clear that they were not all going to complete the trip. Pete was experiencing pain in his knees and after visiting a doctor had to make the difficult decision to pull out of the cycle.

Ben said: 'Pete was really hurting and it looks like it might be ligament problems. He was gutted that he couldn't carry on but we are hoping he might be able to get down to Land's End to meet us.'

Ben and Chris pressed on and are now headed to the finish line. Chris has lived up to his new nickname Captain puncture after totalling five while Ben is smugly saying that he has yet to get a puncture. While he may have steered clear of punctures it was Ben who came off his bike over the handlebars when his wheel went over a manhole cover.

He said: 'So far it has been really good fun but a lot of hard work. We have been eating a ridiculous amount as we are burning so many calories.'

Ben and Chris explained that the real 'back breaker' of the trip had been the mile cycle out of Patterdale in the Lakes, which had been a 20 per cent gradient.
