A CARE home in Ivybridge took a step back in time when they welcomed the local community to their rock-and-roll themed National Care Home Open Day. To mark the occasion, Ivydene Residential and Nursing Home opened its doors to the community for a day of good, old-fashioned fun – with a 1950s music twist. The home was decked out in bunting and decorations galore, complete with old 1950s memorabilia and the care home's team were dressed in their finest 1950s gear. Laura Charters, the home's activities leader, said: 'Today has been absolutely brilliant – it's been a real trip down memory lane. 'We wanted people to see that life in a care home is for living and this day gave us the opportunity to show that. In keeping with the musical rock and roll theme, there was also a juke box for residents and visitors to choose their favourite tracks to sing along to. After the buffet lunch there was music from Al McBrian, a local rock and roll singer along with 1950s dancers performing routines from the era. Dorothy Pope, a resident at the care home, said: 'I had a lovely day, it was wonderful to see everyone all dressed up, being taken back to our era.' National Care Home Open Day, on Friday, June 20, was an event for care homes across the UK to invite the public along to create lasting links between their residents and the local communities.
