YOUNG artists at St John the Baptist Primary School have been sharing their favourite places in Devon with those in government. Children from class three entered a competition to promote the fact that the county is open for business despite the devastating winter storms and rail problems. Run by Totnes MP Dr Sarah Wollaston MP, the youngsters were challenged to design a promotional postcard showing their favourite places. Overall first prize for the best in Devon went to Dartmouth's Lottie Cusack and Dylan Hudson and Daisy Bridges were runners up. All the children who entered received certificates from Dr Wollaston at the school along with an invitation to go to Westminster to see the postcards on show. 'It was a fantastic surprise when the trip was made possible by Dr Wollaston and Dan Slipper from her office,' said a school spokesman. 'Four staff accompanied eight of the class to London and the children had an amazing day in the city. 'After the train journey and a picnic in St James Park watching a rehearsal for the Trooping the of the Colour, they made their way to Westminster, through Portcullis House for a personal tour of the parliament building. 'Afterwards they saw the schools exhibition and had a chat with MPs and office staff who went to view the pictures.' Later the group was able to go into the House of Commons where they saw Home Secretary Teresa May at the start of a debate about extremism in some schools, before a whistle stop tour of some of the sights of the city and The National Gallery. 'It was a very hot day and a lot of walking but everyone thoroughly enjoyed it and appreciated the opportunity to go behind the scenes of Westminster,' said the spokesman.
