Devon & Cornwall Police are raising the awareness of poaching in the South Hams.
Poaching is the killing or taking of wild birds, mammals or fish without the permission of the landowner.
Poaching wild animals is a crime and can have a significant impact of protected species and conservation. It is often under reported and can bet linked to organised crime.
There are simple ways to reduce poaching. Land owners, rural businesses and members of the public are urged to support any suspicious activity to the police noting vehicle details, descriptions and accurate location.
Tips to prevent poaching include securing gates and blocking unused entrances, not accepting game from non-reputable sources along with being aware of unhygienic and unsafe meat entering the food chain, being visible and considering using electronic surveillance such as trail cams along with signs showing the area is privately patrolled or monitored.
