KINGSBRIDGE has six volunteer Special Constables patrolling the streets, giving up their free time to help their community.

Special Constables have the same powers as full-time police officers but they do their shifts in their spare time and without pay. This weekend is National Specials’ Weekend, where events are held across the country to raise the profile of these vital volunteers.

Special Constables come from different backgrounds and have very different day jobs. Kingsbridge’s Specials’ Sargent Sam Honey is responsible for looking after the special constables, liaising with Sgt Dave Green of Kingsbridge Police and keeping tabs on their portfolios and progress within the force, he is an electrician by day.

Kingsbridge’s Special Inspector, Charlotte Jones, is a recruitment consultant, SC Alice Barlow is a logistics and project management consultant, SC Rob Driscoll is a course manager for International Defence Training, SC Eric Stidson is a farmer and SC Dave Wasilewski is an environmental consultant.

Dave explained: ‘I became a Special Constable just under a year ago, and while that year policing has been full of challenges, I’ve loved every minute of it. I decided to dedicate a small amount of spare time each week to Specialling because i really wanted to give something back to the community I live in, and to challenge myself.

‘So far I have met some amazing people, done some things i would never dream of doing in a normal 9 to 5 job and learnt a fair amount as well.

‘I am hoping to join the police full time, but if that doesn’t come to fruition, I am more than happy helping out on a volunteer basis as we receive all the training the regulars do and also assume all of the powers and responsibilities that go with them.

‘Being a Special Constable is something I would highly recommend to anyone who wants to join the police or anyone who just wants to help out and give a little back to the community they live in.’

Sgt Dave Green said: ‘Locally, Kingsbridge police have enjoyed a long and positive relationship with the Special Constabulary. This is made up of men and women of all ages and from all walks of life, who volunteer their time to support local police, thereby cementing the link between police and the community we serve.

‘If you dial 999 it may very well be a Special who comes to your assistance, and you won’t spot the difference. Here in the South Hams we deeply appreciate the support given by the Special Constabulary to policing our main public events, answering calls, and providing a patrol presence.’
