A PHONE scam is currently targeting people in the South Hams, claiming to be from BT and Openreach.

A warning from Devon and Cornwall Police warns of people calling local residents, claiming to be from BT and Openreach and are calling about your internet.

The numbers include 02081 232865 and 001550 822485, and BT have confirmed this is part of a scam operation.

ActionFraud advise people to ask themselves ‘Do I know this is genuine?’ and ‘Is this too good to be true?’ to have more chance of recognising a scam, and if you suspect any frauds or scams report it by calling Action Fraud on 0300 1232040.

They also say: ‘If you ever have doubts about someone phoning you, hang up, ensure the line has been terminated and ring back on an official number. Never give out your PIN number. Banks will never ask for it over the phone.

‘Never give bank cards to anyone at your door, even if they say they are from your bank.’
