KINGSBRIDGE Lawn Tennis Club’s finals day took place on Sunday, September 27, with a slightly delayed start as everyone waited to see what the weather had in store.
Thankfully, the clouds relented and play got under way at 1pm, with a full afternoon and evening of competitive tennis ahead.
The Men’s Singles Cup saw a repeat of last year’s final, with Andy Willmott taking on Andy Woodward. Andy Wilmot reclaimed the title with an impressive 6–0, 6–2 victory.
The Men’s Singles Plate was a much closer affair, with Baz Mullins beating Mark Pierce 7–5, 6–2 after a particularly tight first set.
In the Ladies’ Singles, last year’s champion Tabby Black successfully defended her title against Sonja Harrow, winning 6–0, 6–1. The scoreline perhaps flattered Tabby slightly, however, with Sonja producing some excellent tennis and battling hard throughout.
The Men’s Doubles Cup once again featured Andy Willmott and Andy Woodward, this time with their partners Greg Allen and Andrew Eynon-Lewis respectively. With three Andys on court, Greg certainly had plenty to contend with! Andy and Greg eventually took the title 7–5, 7–5 in another closely fought match.
The Men’s Doubles Plate saw Gareth Bewley and Mike Derry beat Mark Pierce and Steve Puckett, winning the first set comfortably before the second went all the way to a 7–6 tiebreak.
In the Ladies’ Doubles Plate, Sonja Harrow and Jessie beat Mandy Cole and Sally Clarke 6–3, 6–2, while the Ladies’ Doubles Cup produced one of the day’s standout results. New to the tournament but not to tennis, Sarah Allen and Mary Swab beat last year’s champions Anna and Tabby Black, winning 6–3, 7–6 after some excellent rallies and a particularly close second set.
Finally came everybody’s favourite, the Mixed Doubles. Sarah Allen and Mike Derry combined to win the Mixed Plate against Jo Jenkins and George Matheson, 7–5, 6–4. In the Cup, Ruth Derry and Harry Usher continued their excellent form throughout the season, beating last year’s winners Anna Black and Andy Woodward 6–3, 6–2 in a very high-level match.
With so many close matches, the day continued into the early evening, giving the club the opportunity to make good use of its new floodlights. Spectators lined the courts, making the most of the new benches and tables, while a fantastic selection of sandwiches, cakes and nibbles kept everyone going.
The club also presented its Most Improved Player award to Patrick Dornam, recognising his excellent progress and performances throughout the summer.
A huge thank you goes to everyone who played, supported, organised, provided food and helped create such a fantastic atmosphere. Finals Day was a fitting end to another busy summer of tennis at Kingsbridge.
Kingsbridge Lawn Tennis Club has three all-weather, floodlit courts just off Ebrington Street and welcomes new members, whether looking for competitive tennis or simply to enjoy playing socially. Come Play!
