The wind was in the west early last Sunday at Dittisham Sailing Club when race officer Jonathan Weeks arrived.
This is a common direction and the main reason the club has recently purchased a committee boat, for as usual the starting box line was without wind.
The tide had already been ebbing for two hours so it was good that racing commenced on time at 10am with a figure of eight course in a moderate wind.
The handicap fleet started first, led by Bob Thomas, as he was the only Solo racing. He had spotted the starboard bias and took full advantage.
James Dodd had trouble with his centreboard and had to play catch-up throughout as he started two minutes late.
A strong fleet of four Lasers led away to a windward mark close to lower Gurrow Point.
Unfortunately everyone in the handicap fleet sailed round A mark nearby, but as the Laser fleet sailed the same course as well no one was disqualified.
Bob Thomas was first over the finish line ahead of John Phillips and Alex Thom in their Devon Yawl. James Dodd finished third ahead of Paul and Catherine Johns, who were racing one of the new Club Fevas which are proving very popular.
In a keenly fought race in the Lasers, Paul Honey beat Barrie Kenyon with Peter Symons third.
The next racing at Dittisham is next Sunday, May 19, commencing at 11am. This is a special one-day, three-race series for the Bill Leat Cup.
