Cornwood CC
1st XI 86 all out,
Brixham CC
123 all out
Brixham win by 37 runs
Cornwood 1st XI will be hoping that their opening day disappointment, which resulted in defeat against Brixham, does not repeat itself in a hurry.
In a game that Cornwood really should have won, chasing down a meagre target of 123, they slipped from 84-5 to 86 all out.
Brixham's innings never really got going with regular wickets falling.
Cornwood's opening bowler Andy Bees applied the early pressure, which resulted in a five-wicket haul (5-36), then Mike Wood mopped up the tail in his second spell with figures of 3-31.
At the half-way point skipper Craig Harris was more than happy with how his team had opened up, however when it was their turn with the bat it all went horribly wrong.
Perhaps it was first-day nerves, but too many poor shots on the soft pitch meant wickets kept tumbling.
After some resistance from Harris (25) and some generous bowling from Brixham (31 wides), Cornwood limped to 84-5, but then there was a total collapse with the last five wickets falling for just two runs, leaving Cornwood 37 runs short of the target.
Skipper Harris remained upbeat, saying there is more work to be done on the training field. He remains confident of the team's ability and expects to see a marked improvement when they travel to Shobrooke Park on Saturday
There was better news for both Cornwood's 2nd XI and 3rd XI sides, with both teams recording 18-point victories.
The seconds secured a 49-run victory at Exmouth thanks to promising batting contributions from their young players John Whitfield (29) and Matthew Skeemer (26). Cornwood managed a respectable total of 164-9.
In return Exmouth never really got going as Robin Dart spun his way to impressive figures of 5-6.
With U13 colt Matthew Petherbridge playing in his debut senior league game for Cornwood, the third XI chased down a target of 168, losing only five wickets along the way.
Young Petherbridge was joined by his brother Luke and father Dave in a well blended third XI line-up. Matthew bowled very tidily, finishing his eight overs without a wicket but only conceding 24 runs.
Chasing down the Thorveton target, Cornwood leading run scorers were Richard Cavendish (55 no), Phil Bees (36) and Matt Walke (24).
There was no fixture for Cornwood fourths.
