The final of the Bridgetown Trophy pairs competition brought together two powerfull teams who had seen off some tough opposition to reach the final.

Mark Lord and Dave Nicholls were against Alan Golthorpe and Geoff Penhale. The early exchanges gave an indication that pars would not be good enough to win.

By the third hole Goldthorpe and Penhale had gone into a one up lead, only to be pegged back by a birdie from their opponents on the long par-five fourth.

After halving the seventh and eighth, a birdie from Lord saw Lord and Nicholls two up at the turn due to Penhale missing a two feet putt for the half.

However, a birdie from Golthorpe on the 10th and a par from Penhale on the 11th levelled the match again, before a birdie on the 12th and a par on 14 saw Lord and Nicholls edge back onto a two up lead.

With close fought halves on 15 and 16 followed by a four from Nicholls on 17, a 2-1 victory was secured by Lord and Nicholls.

The midweek stableford was played in near perfect conditions and high scores were expected.

Paul Brown, however, was having one of those days where if it goes wrong, it all goes wrong. His drive on the 10th was straight and long but somehow it ended in the middle bunker right of the fairway. Very little sand in the bunker meant that he thinned his shot straight across the green into the deep rough.

Staring a blob in the face, he addressed the ball for a high flop shot which he perfectly executed, landed it softly on the green, and watched in disbelief as it rolled into the hole, 5-4-2, for once he was speechless.

Mike Whitelaw is fast making a name for himself at the club as he is regularly producing good scorecards, none better than on Wednesday when he won the stableford with 43 points.

Second and no intoduction needed was Bob Wotton 40. Third Rob Knight 39, fourth Kevin Eighteen 39, fifth Dave Nicholls 36.

There were six twos: Mark Lord third, Andy Birss seventh, Dave Fahy third, Mike Whitelaw 18th, John Garner third and Samuel Knight fifth.

The monthly stableford saw similiar weather to Wednesday and again high scores were expected and duly delivered.

Steve Atkins is playing on a regular basis now and is beginning to play more consistent golf with more confidence and some say that if he could knock the rough edge off his game he may well get down to 27.

Never lacking in confidence and always up for a challenge, vice captain Ian Metchette teed off early and left his mark on the field with a score of 42 to beat.

Kevin Matthews did beat that by one point but as a member of staff he does not qualify, so Ian takes the well-earned victory.

Second Samuel Knight 40, third Graham White 40, fourth Colin Bell 39, fifth Dave Hicholls 38.
