Wrangaton Golf Club The rearranged captain's day at the weekend proved to be a great success. Following the cancellation of the event previously due to a weather forecast that proved to be wrong, Stuart Newberry's charity day took place with 120 participants. With activities on the day covering all sections of the club, the scores were suprisingly low, though it was a windy day. The overall winner on the day was Chris Flook with 38 points. Bill Purser took the men's divivision one prize with 37 points, with Ian Black second on 35 and Ben Loughran third with 34. The men's second division was taken by Darren Lockley on countback with 38 points from Andrew Jewell and Karl Tideswell. The ladies' stableford was won by Kim Flook with 37 points with Marion Seward close behind on 36 points and Christine Perkins with 32. Alex Griffiths won the junior event with 42 points which also gave him the junior club championship. Drew Bowden was second with 41. The vets competition was won by Bob Kirkpatrick with 37 points with Len Simpson second on 35. There were longest drives and nearest pin competitions, too many to mention the winners, and nine twos were also recorded on the day. Over £800 was raised on the day for Children's Hospice SW from various sources, including a charge for members to park in their own car park, a contribution for coffee and bacon rolls, a challenge on the 17th from golf pro Stuart Barrett, fines and the sale of shots from the catering staff Chrissy and Kerry. Finally, the members clubbed together to put captain Stuart Newberry through the 'Ice Bucket Challenge' that he thought he'd got away with. Stuart Newberry and two colleagues are doing a 220-mile cycle challenge for his charity in the coming weekend, which involves cycling to all four clubs involved in the 1895 Centenary Trophy, Wrangaton, Mullion, Gt Torrington and finishing at Exeter. They will be playing golf at each venue then cycling to the next one all in aid of the children's Hospice South West. Anyone wishing to sponsor Stuart and his team may do so by ringing Bob Clark at the club.
