Thirty ladies played a 14-hole fun competition on Wednesday is glorious sunny weather writes Liz Line.
They played in teams of three and were only allowed one club and a putter, with no sharing of clubs. They only played one ball and took turns to hit. The difficulty came if they had to get out of a bunker with a driver or fairway wood.
Over the 14 holes the winning team was that of Victoria Gibbens (17) Gill Hicks (13) and new member Elizabeth Stewart (13) with 66.7.
In second place were Jan Brooking (17), Lesley Saffin (20) and the new lady captain Heather Spencer (13) with 70.8. In third place were Sheila George (36), Sally Huntley (15) and Judith Lungmuss (20) with 74.
Last year’s ladies’ captain Sheila George and the ladies’ section raised £1,620 for her charity the NSPCC. A cheque was presented to Alison Armer, the representative of the charity. Sheila and Alison thanked all members who had supported the 2017 fundraising events.
The men’s stableford competition on Saturday only attracted 20 entries as the weather was rain and strong winds.
However, some of the scores were very good despite the difficult conditions. In division one the winner was Duncan McDonald (13) with 36 points, from junior Toby White (14) 35, and third Chris McGowan (13) 34.
The best score came from division two winner Robert Hyde (24) with 41 points, second Mike Doyle (20) 36, and third Ashley Crow (15) 35.
There were only two twos from Dan Cunningham on the third and Toby White on the fifth.
