COMPETITION of the week at Dartmouth Golf Club was the Barrett Cup, incorporating the Mixed Stableford.
With prizes generously provided by Malcom Barrett, the competition raised £350 for his chosen charity, Prostate Cancer.
Such generosity was rewarded with an outstanding performance by Lee Marels. Playing off +2, Lee shot a course record 65 for 41 points and it could have been even better.
John Dingle (40) and Ian Metchette (40) weren’t far behind whilst Beccy Barrett (39) won the ladies tournament ahead of Tina Scanlan (37) and Chris Mushens (34).
Junior Barrett Cup winner was Charlie West and Lew Easter was the men’s over-28 handicap winner.
Lee Marels and Chris Mushens had the longest drivers whereas Gary Bonser, Rob Haddy, Pete Hannaford and Lee Marels (2) had the nearest the pins.
Meanwhile, the ladies were faced with 35mph gusts of wind for their medal round.
Chris Mushens was blessed with a par on the eighteenth, which gave her third place on count back from Anne Woodward on 78.
Mary Thompson kept the big numbers off her card and finished second with 76, leaving Jules Vincent to pip her to the win and the Norton Salver with 75.
The Dartmouth course ladies were also playing a medal but sensibly kept it to nine holes. Barbara Dally and Sharon Jones led the way and both finished under par, shooting nett 31 and 32 respectively.
It was lovely to welcome Kate Merriam to her first Dartmouth competition and to see her finish in third place.
The winds had abated for the men’s midweek Stableford and gave the opportunity for some good scores. With 36, John Merriam was just one point short of matching his wife’s third-place finish but was beaten to that position by Bobby Wotton’s 37.
John Cousins was just ahead with 38 points but it was David Thompson taking the honours with a blob-free 40 points.
