AFTER the relentless sunshine that has given so many courses a real battering this summer, the conditions at Libbaton were a welcome sight for Devon’s golfers.

There was plenty to play for as many of Devon’s finest seniors gathered for the Senior Men’s Stableford Championship with three trophies up for grabs. The Veteran’s Challenge Cup was on offer for the best nett Stableford score, the Bert Hudson Trophy for the best scratch Stableford score and the Pensioner’s Plate for the best nett score from a player aged 65 and over.

Despite everyone being full of praise for the course, the scoring proved a little tougher than expected.

Anything over 30 points was looking pretty handy but it was Rupert Crofts (PH 20) of Honiton who really hit the sweet spot, producing an excellent 37 points to take the Veterans' Challenge Cup and the Pensioners' Plate and the honours as player of the day. Saunton's Mark Snape (PH -1) was runner up with 34 points and Ian Longhurst (PH 9, Libbaton) was third on count back with 33 points.

Alongside Ian on 33 points were Bovey Tracey duo Richard Ward and Paul Blease with Andy Williams (Bovey Castle), Richard Dunn (Teignmouth) and Peter Jacques (Libbaton) all one back from them.

Mark Snape also won the Bert Hudson Cup (scratch) with 35 points, Tim Aggett (Warren) was runner up with 31 points and Andy Clark (Honiton) was third with 30 points.

A huge DevonGolf thank you goes to everyone at Libbaton who helped make the day such a success. Jeff did a sterling job as a starter, members were out spotting balls, the clubhouse team were wonderful and a special mention for the very capable Bev in the office, who helped Competition Manager Wendy keep everything running smoothly.
