On a bright, sunny morning early in January, the 2017 men’s captain Ben Guest, ladies’ captain Sally Errett and seniors’ captain Tony Messenger met with Lesley Ann Simpson from the Prostate Cancer UK charity and handed over a cheque for £2,796 writes Sally Errett.
All captains would like to express their thanks to club members for supporting the charity and raising these funds. The money was amassed from various social functions over the last year – a pig racing evening organised by Ben, a barn dance organised by Sally and from Tony, profits from raffles and the senior captain’s away day. This charity was chosen by all the captains because Ben’s father, Andy Guest (Guesty), a Kingsbridge resident, passed away in 2016 from prostate cancer.
The ladies were in action on Saturday, January 20, playing a stableford competition. The weather, once again, consisted of driving winds and rain. However, the ladies battled the elements to record the following scores. In first place Cathy Harrington (11) 30 points, second place Maggie Best (16) 29 points and third place Anne Petty-Brown (36) with 23 points. There was just one two, on the 10th hole by Cathy Harrington.
The men’s competition which should have been held on Sunday, January 21, was cancelled due to monsoon conditions; hopefully the elements will be kinder next Sunday.
The Friday circus managed to play on January 19 and the best score posted was by Phil Towner (12) with 38 points, followed by Martin Scarterfield (4) on 34 and in third place David Fox (17) with 34. Well done all of them for really good scores in appalling conditions.
While it is difficult to play golf at the moment with the awful weather conditions it is very pleasing to report that the 19th hole at Bigbury is really busy!
On Thursday evening, January 25, a Burns Night meal was held in the clubhouse.
Liz had prepared a feast of Scottish food for 46 members and guests. A piper started proceedings followed by Howard, who addressed the haggis! Superb food and great company was had by all.
