Ronald Cup

Riviera United 5

Rain put paid to many of the weekend’s scheduled matches in the South Devon Football League, but some hardy souls managed to beat the conditions.

One game that did make it, in the Ronald Cup, saw promotion-seeking Riviera United score three times in a five-minute spell in the first half as they sought to sweep hosts East Allington United reserves, who prop up the table, out of the competition.

But the Poole Lane Pirates were determined not to be bullied and launched a successful comeback bid in the second half.

First, Luke Comerford netted his first for the club, heading home a Luke Smith cross, before Rob Hutching’s goal from a narrow angle gave the home side real hope of forcing a result.

Pressure from Fin Watson then opened up a chance for Justin Denning who made no mistake with a great strike into the top corner.

But there was to be no cup upset after all as Rivi struck twice more in extra-time to finally make it into the last eight.

Stephen Rohan netted twice for the visitors with Callum Hale, Joe Brittain and Shane Essam the other goalscorers.
