At first glance it may seem a little odd. A golf professional who has trained several brilliant young players is trying to find more juvenile talent – to play football writes Lincoln Shaw.

Those who know Steve White well will understand why. In addition to the top job at Thurlestone Golf Club he spends much of his spare time at Malborough FC just down the road, where he manages a soccer team of youngsters who have been doing well and making quite a name for themselves.

There were 16 when he took over a year ago but, for various reasons, several have dropped out and only 12 have said they are available for the new seasons ahead.

‘They are a great bunch of lads and some of them are pretty talented players’ says Steve. ‘But what happens if a couple cant play because of illness or some other reason?

‘For the team to stand any chance of starting the season, we desperately need a few more keen footballers.’

Those who respond to his appeal will find a very friendly atmosphere at Malborough which nurtures talent from an early age.
