CORNWOOD trounced Plymouth by 97 runs at Mount Wise to go joint second in the Tolchards DCL Premier Division table.
Samarpit Joshi dug in for a top score of 50 towards Cornwood’s 50-over total of 229 for nine.
Cornwood seamer Matt Skeemer did what he does these days – blow away rival top orders – as Plymouth stumbled to 38 for three.
There was a brief Plymouth recovery until they lost four wickets getting from 60 to 69. It was downhill all the way to 132 all out after that.
Elilott Staddon, the Cornwood captain, said winning the toss was a big factor in winning the match.
“We were able bat first on what was, putting it lightly a tricky pitch that only got worse as the day went on,” said Staddon.
“Matt Skeemer – again – was superb with the new ball which, with rain around, allowed us to get control of the game.
Joshi, in at 13 for one, was instrumental adding 103 runs before he was fourth out. Charles Finan (25) and Ryan Rickard (21) added value along the way.
Skeemer (29) and a sizeable smattering of 45 extras helped Cornwood’s total along.
The Stein brothers – Ben (3-42) and Sam (2-33) – were Plymouth’s leading wicket takers.
Skeemer (3-24) took out Plymouth’s top three, which left Teddy Haffenden (15) and Mekyle Pillay (11) a rebuilding task. They got as far as 60 for three.
Four wickets fell in five overs for nine runs scored as Plymouth collapsed. Skipper Sam Stein stoppered up one end 44 before he was the last man out.
Wickets were shared between Staddon (2-22), Lee Baker 2-27 and Alex Shutt (2-17).
Spinner Baker now has 29 Premier wickets this season at less than 12 runs each. Only Paignton professional Aya Gqamana (38) has taken more.
