CHRIS Harrison and Mitch Trewin had competing claims for man-of-the-match in Stoke Gabriel 2nd XI’s 107-run win over visitors Lewdown.

Trewin launched the Stoke Gabriel innings with 75 in a stand of 134 with Harrison.

Harrison went on to make 91 and looked odds on for a ton when he was bowled by Lewdown’s Will Mallinson. That wicket broke a partnership with Dan Bullock worth 73.

Once Mallinson got a taste for wicket-taking, there was no stopping him with four more in his second spell including two in successive balls on the way to match figures of six for 47. He was also a man-of-the-match candidate.

Bullock was the ninth and last man out for Stoke for 60 in their total of 291.

Harrison and Trewin took seven wickets between them – four for Harrison, three for Trewin – to bowl Lewdown out for 184.

In a running total of 135 for nine, only Sid Yarrow (22) and Matt Maynard (21) got past 20.

Last-wicket pair Mallinson (32no) and Jimmy Simmons (22) put on 49 to give the scoreline added respectability.

Meanwhile, Stoke Gabriel’s 1st XI look in good shape for their top-of-the-table clash with B Division leaders Bideford this Saturday on the strength of a seven-wicket win over Bovey Tracey 2nd XI.

Adriaan Maxwell (5-19) and Mike Smith (2-13) soon had Bovey reeling at 10 for three – and 32 for five with Sam Russell just out was not much of an improvement.

Sam Veal with a guarded 24 off 58 balls, and Joe Forey with a brisker 23, edged Bovey towards an all-out tally of 82.

Stoke lost opener Tyler Hunter to ball one of their innings. From then on it was routine stuff.

By the time Justin Pringle was dismissed for 44, the target was six to win. Mike Meech (18no) and Abhishek Anand (9no) finished the job.

Stoke skipper Jack Tolley, who did not have to bat or bowl, said: “Bovey can be a dangerous side so this was a great win for us.

“Mike and Adriaan bowled brilliantly with the new ball and had them 27 for four. Andy Ball (1-19) and Kyle Lardner (1-18) backed them up before ‘Maxi’ came back and got through the rest of the order.”

Tolley said a dressing room decision to chase positively had an unintended consequence.

“Tyler took that a little bit too literally and got out first ball,” said Tolley.

“Mike Meech and Justin Pringle steadied the ship and took us to the end.

“Disappointing to lose a third wicket and miss out on the 20th point, but we can’t argue with a win like that!”

Looking ahead to this Saturday, Tolley said: “A huge game next and, as ever, we are ready for it.”

Elsewhere, Cornwood 2nd XI came a cropper against C Division West bottom side Hatherleigh by four wickets at Oak Park.

The Wood were dismissed for 169 in the 42nd of the 45 overs available to them, which Hatherleigh passed with 15 balls to spare.

Lastly, three wickets each for Jack Worth and Nispthan Saravnane helped Ivybridge 2nd XI to a 34-run win away at Tavistock 2nd XI in D Division West.

Tavistock, set 186 to win, were bowled out for more than three overs to go for 151.
