PAUL QUEST, of Duke Street, Dartmouth, writes: The closure of the scrubbing grid on the north embankment by South Hams Council and the Dart Harbour & Navigation Authority is another example of health and safety gone mad. It is apparently because a boat fell over while being worked on. As any prudent and experienced boat owner will tell you, there is always the possibility of this happening, and they will take steps to ensure that it doesn't happen by the judicious use of weights and ropes. If it does then the boat owner has made a mistake and is responsible. Is this the thin end of the wedge? Why not stop people launching their boats from the slipway because they might fall in or damage their boat? Why not stop children crab fishing from the embankment because they might fall in? Come to think of it, why not reinstall the ancient chain across the river entrance to stop people taking their boats into what is an unsafe environment? Very soon we'll be living in a cocoon, afraid to step outside our doors in case the lawyers and insurance companies that thrive in this litigious society pounce on us with a lawsuit.
