The West Alvington Horticultural Society held its 72nd Annual Show last Saturday, at the nearby local village hall in Malborough with a total of 435 entries.

Show secretary and treasurer Keith Steer said: “It really was a great show although, as expected, entries had fallen with the very hot and dry weather but there were still very high quality exhibits on display and we raised £1,304 in just over two-hours and all the committee were simply delighted.”

Throughout the competition the battle was fierce. In the vegetable sections Mark Boon took the Kinsman Cup and cup for most points in the onion classes and Tony Church was the major contender in the open section with Mike Hine winning best onions cup and Mary Wright the Blue ribbon with a superb exhibit of figs.

Roy Tucker took the cup for highest points in the potato classes and Mike Bowles, from Slapton, carried away the trophy for best tomatoes.

The champion of the day was Keith Steer winning the Cordelia Came Centennial Memorial Cup for the most points in the show, the Preserves cup, the Cookery Cup, the Beryl Brooking Memorial Cup, for a fruit cake, as well as the Blue Ribbon for best Domestic exhibit with his coffee sponge and the photography trophy.

Jenny Seal once again triumphed in the bread classes, Terry Reeves dominated the flower sections, winning six trophies including the coveted Colonel Cowley Cup and a blue ribbon with some exceptional dahlias, Bob Gould secured the cup for the best pom-pon and in the novices section Sheila Hine from Loddiswell triumphed.

Sheila also won the Mary Dickson Memorial Cup for best roses in the show. Sarah Oatley was delighted with her results in the handicraft section securing the trophy for the fourth year, Jeanne Hudson won the Painting cup and Ed Hill won the hobby cup with an exquisite bird made from metal knives and forks.

Linsay Johns impressed the judge with her Floral Art entries winning the Dawson Cup with her colourful floral interpretations. The children’s entries were once again very artistic and drew great praise with their creativity depicting the Royal year and the awards were won by Evie Rolfe, Millie and Maisie Prowse.

The committee expressed their sincere thanks to all the judges who gave of their time willingly. They were David Coward, Dave Bradford, Joe Wallis and Brian Griffiths (vegetables), John Yeo (flowers), Cynthia Morgan (floral art), Harriet Brooks-Brownlie (juniors), Pat Janes (preserves and junior cookery) Diane Rodwell (cookery), Jeremy Willcocks (photography) and Adrienne Blake (handicrafts).

At the end of the day the trophies were awarded by the 2018 President Mrs Pat Janes, who is a great stalwart of the show and their longest serving judge of over 30 years.
