John Sprague, of Knowle Road, Salcombe, writes: I am surprised at how naive Abi Tucker, James Heaven and their waterskiing friends are when they say that only 'highly qualified boat drivers' would operate 'under strict rules in a designated area where only one boat at a time would operate'. I do not doubt that would be the intention of the local waterskiing club, but how would it be policed, by whom and with what sanction against offenders? Currently local and visiting speed freaks are deterred from exceeding the harbour speed limit in part by the absence of anyone else doing the same. But with waterskiing allowed at Widegates, mayhem will be encouraged. Non-club members will see it as open season and I doubt the local club would be able to deter some of our more arrogant visitors from doing exactly what they please, whether that is skiing, towing bananas, jet-skiing or simply whizzing up and down in Daddy's overpowered rib. No, this proposal must be turned down.
