Graham Fish, of Kingsbridge Family Church, writes: Regarding June 12's News of the Weird, I would like to respond to your idea of Jesus surfing the Sea of Galilee. I think it is unlikely, as the gospel accounts say Jesus came 'walking' on the water (Matthew 14:25/26). It would also have required Jesus to 'drive' the waves to take him to meet the disciples in the boat. He could have done that, because it says 'even the wind and waves obey him' (Matthew 8:27). But why do that when you can walk on water? But if you are looking for a reference for surfing in the New Testament, then go to Acts 27:44. There you will find an account of the apostle Paul's sail to Rome. The ship, which is full of soldiers and prisoners, including Paul, is hit by a wind 'of hurricane force'. The chapter covers the storm and shipwreck in great detail, and right at the end says 'the centurion ordered those who could swim to jump overboard first and get to land. The rest were to get there on boards, and some on broken pieces of the ship. In this way everyone reached land in safety'. It's a very natural thing to lay on a board or plank of wood and paddle for the shore and as the sea meets the beach there are waves and breakers, so if those men on boards or planks get driven ashore by the waves, then that's surfing. It just goes to show that there is more in the Bible than we all realise.
