REG SAMPSON, of Loddiswell, writes:
The question of the original name of Loddiswell was recently raised.
The Evangelical Magazine, published in 1808, had mistakenly spelt 'Laddiswell' and this mistake had also appeared on an old picture postcard of Loddiswell Mill.
The earliest reference to the village is in the Domesday Book of 1086 where the Anglo-Saxon name is Lodeswilla, interpreted as Lod's Village, and Lod's Well as a stream or spring of a man called Lod.
The Loddiswell History Group refurbished the well in AD 2000 and placed a plaque on it stating 'Lod was the owner of this well in Saxon times, from it the village takes its name'.
Research with Devon Archivist at the time confirmed this.
