Students who have signed up to become members of a University Royal Navy Unit (URNU) have swapped their academic lives to experience what it means to be an Officer Cadet at Britannia Royal Naval College (BRNC).

In total, 335 students spent a weekend at the college taking part in activities such as parade training, leadership tasks, navigation and also spent time on the Picket Boats exploring the river Dart.

Sub Lieutenant Lewis Ginger, BRNC’s Sponsored Undergraduate Staff Officer, said: “The three weekends were not just a great opportunity for the students to gain an understanding of life as a cadet.

“They were also able learn more about the Royal Navy and ask questions of the cadets and staff here at BRNC. The students behaved impeccably throughout the weekend and I am seriously impressed with what they have achieved.

“While as a member of the URNU there is no obligation to join the Royal Navy, I personally would urge the students to consider the Service after their degrees so they, like me, can have the best job in the world.

“My thanks also go to all the staff and trainees at BRNC for helping and getting involved, without them it would not have been possible to achieve.”

There are 15 URNUs located across the UK offering opportunities to over 700 undergraduates from the country’s leading universities.

Students at University can join an URNU as full or associate members, the units offer much more than any “ordinary student” will get to experience. From deployments on a P2000 to Adventurous Training a whole world of possibility opens up just waiting to be explored, turning the ordinary student experience into an extraordinary experience.
