Keith Turner, of Sherford, near Kingsbridge, writes: In their professional assessment of the wind turbine application at Winslade Farm, Frogmore, the South Hams Council planning officer and the environmental officer gave overwhelming reasons why this application should be refused. Added to this, objections were more than two to one against, so you would quite reasonably expect the development management committee to give a resounding refusal for this application. Anything less would be akin to the turkeys voting in favour of Christmas. Well, the turkeys did vote in favour, five of them, and the question is why? Dr G Nicol, Letters, May 30, wrote that the applicant had told him several months earlier that this was 'a done deal', which begs the question, how could he be so confident so long before the event? The answer lies in the composition of the planning committee, which has a substantial number of members with strong farming connections. It's equally quite clear from previous turbine applications the strong bias in favour over sound reasons to refuse. The applicant's confidence also implies successful lobbying in receptive ears. Given these factors and scant regard for impartiality displayed by some of the committee, agricultural turbine applications are bound to succeed. The approval for the Winslade application means the area of outstanding natural beauty is merely a collection of meaningless words further exacerbated by the fact that even the AONB chairman, Cllr Richard Foss, voted in favour! The crucial question arising from this scandalous situation is how many more utterly inappropriate turbine applications will get nodded through on a cosy buddy basis? Perhaps the only redress will be for the local community to remember, when at the ballot box, how Julian Brazil and five others supported this planning application.
