THE BRENT Island Trust will be celebrating its 20th anniversary of owning Brent Island this weekend. The trust will be marking the anniversary of the opening with an Island Fair on Saturday, June 7. Twenty years ago the community of South Brent bought Brent Island 'for the protection of wildlife and for people to enjoy'. Following local fund-raising, grants from community bodies, and donations from across the country, they were able to raise £26,500 in just four months to make the purchase and secure the future of The Island as a public amenity for all time. South Brent MP, Dr Sarah Wollaston, will open the event which will take place from 2pm to 5pm on the island. The land was officially opened by naturalist and broadcaster Kelvin Boot on June 5, 1994. Live music and a licensed bar along with a barbecue, ice creams, a tombola, face painting and games will all be features of the day. In the event of bad weather the fair will take place in the village hall. There will also be stands from Sustainable South Brent and the Westcountry Rivers Trust giving details of the work they do. Brent Island is an area of just over three acres standing below St Petroc's parish church and accessed via Millswood Lane. It is designated as public access land, through an agreement with Dartmoor Nation-al Park Authority, and managed by the Brent Island Trust, a registered charity. Currently the historic weir at the island is being repaired, in partnership with Westcou-ntry Rivers Trust, for both spawning fish and the people of the community. The weir, which has been located next to the island for at least 350 years, was damaged in recent storms and bad weather but – thanks to a partnership project – is due to be restored for the future.
