VIVIEN MOORE of Westbury, Wilts, writes:
With reference to the letter 'house named after builder', February 7. This was of interest to me. I am the niece, by marriage of the late Mr Gerald Perrott (J & G Perrott) of Duncombe Street. He was married to my father's sister, Miss Marjory Moore of South Milton. I recall that Mr G Perrott was an undertaker – the business is still running today from Duncombe Street.
As a child I used to visit my Aunt and Uncle at their home in Waterloo Road. I believe J G Perrott were closely associated with the building of the Trouts Hotel for the Misses Patience and Ella Trout. Mr Gerald Perrott undertook all the carpentry involved and I recall seeing a stone or plaque set low in one of the outer walls with his name on it, and possibly that of others.
Mr Father, Mr Francis Moore of Frogmore worked on the installation of the generator. He was also responsible for installing the winch at the top of the slipway near the hotel.
My brother, John P Moore, also now in his early 80's was a pupil at Kingsbridge Grammar School in the late 1940s. He recalls seeing Ella Trout driving her blue Wolsey Saloon to Kingsbridge, probably with crabs for the local fishmonger.
I am not aware of any family connections with Salcombe; they may well exist and I would be interested to incorporate them in my own family history!
Mr Gerald Perrott was born in 1907 and died in April 1974. he was interned in at South Milton with his wife's family.
I hope these details are of some interest.
