Robin Griffin, of Kingsbridge Town Council, writes: No townsperson I know – and that includes my fellow councillors – will ever forget their horror at the death of Alex Peguero Sosa, nor their disgust at our police officers being assaulted recently. However, Kingsbridge has a very strong community and four recent events that I have observed closely underline the determination of local people to enliven and develop Kingsbridge as a town to be proud of. The preparation for our Britain in Bloom inspections on Friday, July 11, then the marvellous local projects on Saturday, 12 July, featured 3,000 hours of voluntary labour and we very much hope for a top verdict on our work. In the meantime, the recreation park – featuring teamwork between Kingsbridge in Bloom, Marika's cafe plus the two Matts who work for South Hams Council's parks department, has again won a green flag for excellent provision for townsfolk and visitors. The town criers competition on Friday and Saturday featured 10 contestants (some from Bermuda), who performed in our town square near the end of Fair Week. It was a colourful, noisy and very humorous event watched by many townsfolk. This year's Fair Week is being called the best ever. A small group of highly motivated locals provided a week-long programme of very varied events, backed up by the never-failing generosity of David Rowlands. My point is not only to congratulate these wonderfully successful groups, but to thank the literally hundreds of local people who have donated their time and in many other ways supported these events or made appreciative remarks. The good heart of our town continues to beat strong.
