Brenda Brocklebank, of Bolberry Road, Hope Cove, writes:
In response to the coverage of the Sun Bay Hotel planning application and the excellent letters to the editor, which I must say sum up the feelings of the vast majority of the locals who will have to live with this eyesore, I would like to add a few more comments.
We still have no idea how on earth those 11 councillors who passed this application came to the conclusion it would be beneficial to the village.
The sheer size of this modern complex is far too big and out of character for such a small village.
A great many of the letters of objection came from visitors to the village who, like their families before them, keep coming back because Hope Cove remains unspoilt and they would like it to remain so for their future families to enjoy, not have it dragged into the 21st century as this project plans to do.
As for providing employment for up to 30 local people, I would be very keen to know where the applicant plans to recruit them.
After over 30 years in the hotel business in Hope Cove, we have never been able to find a small percentage of this number and have to rely on live-in European and overseas staff each season.
Did any of the councillors in their investigations of the plans contact the other businesses or job centres in the area to enquire on staff recruitment?
Hope Cove is a seasonal village, ask any of the businesses here. There will not be enough trade to support such a large complex all the year round, so what sort of future will it have?
All that is left to say to those councillors and the applicant, if they are reading this, is how disappointed and disgusted I am with them for ignoring the pleas of the villagers, visitors and local parish council and voting towards the future ruin of Hope Cove.
