NICK HURST, of Fore Street, Kingsbridge, writes:

As a resident of Fore Street, I do not have the benefit of off-street parking or residents' parking and have to park in the street subject to complying with two hours at a time Monday to Saturday.

As you might imagine, it can be quite challenging and from time to time a number of us – some more than others – have forgotten the time and been faced with a fine of £25, if paid promptly, otherwise £50.

However, Sunday is a day of rest for us all and more so for some of us, as we are able to park all day without incurring a worry.

You might expect, as I did, that over a bank holiday the same rules might apply, but no. How wrong I was.

On my way out, about 11am on Monday, I was confronted by the traffic warden dishing out tickets to most of the cars on Fore Street – clearly their owners appeared to be under the same misapprehension as I was.

In a frenzy of activity, she managed to issue over 17 parking tickets in what appeared as many minutes. It must have been like striking gold.

When I expressed my surprise, I was told, quite firmly, that bank holidays are 'normal days' and therefore cars are subject to the 'normal' weekly parking regulations.

By my simple maths, in a short-time she had earned South Hams Council somewhere between £425 and £850 – not bad for an hour's work on a bank holiday!

I think at the very least the council should make it clear to residents – and indeed visitors to the area – that on bank holidays normal parking restrictions apply.

It was pretty clear to me that fellow parkers that day were under the same impression as me and so, on behalf of us all, I challenge the council to donate the income from these fines to a good local charity.
