We lead on concerns expressed by the Old Dartmothians about the state of Dartmouth’s prestigious Royal Avenue Gardens and how the mayor, Cllr Richard Cooke, has asked them to wait until the town council knows the outcome of its asset transfer bid to South Hams District Council, which currently owns the gardens, before refurbishing the pond.

Our picture shows a generous £20,000 grant towards the refurbishment costs of Kingswear Hall being handed over by Kingswear couple Dawn and Wynne Griffiths to hall committee chairman Hilary Bussell. The couple then have a dig, urging "a small self-appointed clique who ‘stomp’ around the village complaining and objecting to any change, harassing councillors, hounding planners, lobbying local papers, wasting rate payers’ money and irritating villagers to do something more positive with their time."

Inside, we have news that a shoplifter, who stole a £550 bottle of cognac celebrating the royal marriage between Charles and Diana, has been jailed.

There’s also news from Woofstock UK... embargoed until tonight.

As ever, there’s much, much more news inside.
