KINGSBRIDGE police moved speedily this week to reassure local residents that there is no huge increase in violent crime in the town following two incidents of disorder at the weekend. Four holidaymakers from the Manchester area were arrested in the early hours of Sunday on suspicion of assaulting two local residents and a 25-year-old local man was arrested for being drunk and disorderly on the same evening. Sgt Dave Green said: 'These two incidents were relatively minor. 'Four men from the Manchester area were arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning, and have since been bailed; and a local man was arrested for being drunk and disorderly.' The group of men were chased by the door staff of Coast nightclub on Lower Union Road but eluded them. They were then spotted by police officers and were chased along the Quay car park and towards the slipway. After a search, assisted by Prawle Point Coastguard and police dogs Sally and Harry, two of the suspects were located in the water and two on the bank by Tacket Wood. All four were arrested for assault and public order offences. The same evening, Daniel Rowe, 25, was also arrested outside Coast nightclub and has been charged with being drunk and disorderly and assaulting a police officer as he was being arrested. But Sgt Green believes that more 'knowledge of crime' is leading people to think that there is an increased level in the area – which, he says, is misleading. He said: 'Last summer Kingsbridge police didn't have a Facebook page, but now we use it regularly to let people know about the work we are doing. 'The Facebook page means that we can let people know what their police team is up to and this is a good thing. 'But it also means residents are getting knowledge of incidents almost immediately rather than having to search out the information or read it in the news. 'Unfortunately Kingsbridge saw the first murder in 12 years when Alex Peguero Sosa sadly lost his life and then an incident shortly afterwards when two of our officers were assaulted while carrying out their duty. This was also the first incident of that type since February 2012. 'It has been bad luck that these incidents have happened close to each other and people are always going to be more sensitive after an incident such as this, but after policing this town for 19 years on-and-off, in my opinion, Kingsbridge is not seeing a particular increase in crime or a general wave of disorder.' Sgt Green pointed out that crime over the summer is always likely to increase as the population swells and people have money to spend in the area's pubs and clubs, but compared to other towns, it happens 'very rarely'. If you have any information on the incident of assault by the four men, call 101 and quote Log 111 of 17/08/14.
