In response to concern about excessive dog-mess, in spite of being a dog lover and owner myself I must acknowledge there are far too many dogs in our small island.

Dogs are rescued from as far afield as Romania and Afghanistan, while we have become nothing but the dustbin for poor, unwanted animals from Ireland. We are such sentimental fools.

If hotels and apartment owners in places such as Salcombe and Kingsbsridge would crack down and stop admitting these ‘pampered pooches’ there would be a lot less excrement left on the pavements.

I could go on – but we have only ourselves to blame.
