It was New Year’s Eve that set me thinking how much we take for granted.

Arriving at a local super­market earlyish, I was so impressed with how warmly I was welcomed.

How easy it is to forget, or perhaps to have never known, about the very early starts and the on-call requirements – in-store alarms can go off and have to be responded to whatever time of day or night.

A big thank you to all of those who worked those anti­social hours, including working when many of us are enjoying a public holiday.
