Martin Ranwell, of Modbury, writes:
I suggest Cllr David May, chairman of South Ham Council's development management committee, Letters, August 31, is missing the point of previous correspondence and the increasingly critical mood of many local electors and taxpayers.
Nobody doubts the commitment and sincerity of those involved, nor that they are following the planning policies and guidelines. It is more a case of not approving of these policies and guidelines, which appear to be leading to the progressive destruction of much of what we love and cherish in the South Hams.
It is high time that our representives said 'no' to unsuitable and unpopular developments, whether they be heavily subsidised wind turbines, solar farms, housing developments or nationwide chains of coffee shops.
The tourism industry is critical to the financial well-being of this area – without it we would all suffer a serious economic decline.
Any development that could be detrimental to the character of our towns, villages and countryside, and thereby deter tourism, should be rejected.
The Localism Act 'will devolve greater powers to councils and neighbourhoods and give local communities more control over housing and planning decisions'.
Let's make sure these new powers are used for the benefit of the South Hams.
Development management committee, please take note.
